Bloodlines - Book #1

Rose's story might have wrapped up in the Vampire Academy series, but there's still lots more to tell about the other characters from that world. Last Sacrifice will be the last book about Rose, but it'll be followed by a spin-off series still set in the Vampire Academy world. Side characters we know from the current series will now be our main characters, and there'll be a whole new storyline (not the last one told from a different perspective). This spin-off series centers around Sydney the Alchemist, as well as Jill, Eddie, and everyone's favorite heartbroken hero from the last series. More details coming later this year! Bloodlines is the first novel in this new series (and also the name of the series) and has been released on August 23.

In June 2010, Preger Entertainment optioned the film rights to the Vampire Academy series. On July 6, they announced that producer Don Murphy joined them to help bring the series to the big screen.

1* Selling film options means we now have a great production company (Preger Entertainment) and producer that can help make the book(s) into film. Me? I can't make a movie. My specialty is writing books. Theirs is making films happen, which is why we're lucky to have them on board.

2* But, no film is being made yet. To do that, we need a lot of things: a script, a cast, and most importantly, a studio. Preger is currently pitching VA to studios, and when a studio picks it up, that's when all that other movie magic can happen. So, if you're hearing about filming taking place right now, it isn't true.

3* Like I said earlier: I write books. I don't make movies, so I don't do the casting or directing or anything. People are writing to me about actor choices, but that'll be up to film makers when casting time comes.

4* People are worried about differences between the book and a movie, but truthfully? It's impossible for any movie to be exactly like a book. Books are too long to put every page into 2 hours. So cuts and adaptations are always made. Some books turn into good movies; some don't. And of course, no actor will match every single person's vision of a character. It's just impossible.

5* Will a movie "ruin the VA books"? I hear people worry about this too. The answer? Of course not! The books already exist, and I'll keep writing the way I want. Nothing will change them. :) A movie's a way of retelling them, and I wouldn't have signed with Preger if I didn't have faith in them doing something really awesome.

6* How do we get this thing going? As mentioned, Preger needs a studio to get things started, and one of the best ways to get a studio's attention is to show the fan support. So, if you're on Facebook, join the Official Vampire Academy Movie Page. Its numbers are growing FAST, and it's really sending a message about VA-love. It's also where Preger puts official announcements and dispels rumors. Fans are starting lots of little movie pages, which is awesome, but please make sure to join up with the official one so there's an easy source to see all the fan support as a mass, rather than everyone being split in different places. Preger also has an Official VA Movie Twitter account.

7* The Facebook page above is also a great place to discuss your thoughts about casting, what shouldn't be cut, etc. Even though there's no movie yet, Preger and I are both reading the comments there! If you're anti-Facebook, there's my Yahoo Mailing List too. Those are the best locations to discuss your thoughts rather than building long threads here in the comments.

I hope that clears up some of the questions! This is all very exciting, and in a lot of ways, I'm in as much suspense as you are. Film-making requires a lot of patience, but I know Preger and crew are already meeting with studios. So, keep your fingers crossed, and thanks for showing your support!

Preger Entertainment posted a few questions and answers on their facebook page addressing some of the most commonly asked questions regarding the upcoming movie.

1.When is the movie coming out? Once we have a finalized deal with a studio we would ideally like to have the film in the theatres 18 months later.

2. Have any studios showed interest? We have met with our first round of studios and are continuing to have active talks. Many things go into a studio taking on a project: budgets, schedules, etc. It’s not only finding a studio that wants to do the film, it’s about finding the RIGHT studio. Once we have some official news, you will be the first to know!

3. Who is in the cast? Casting won’t begin until a script is written, which won’t happen until we make a deal.

4. Will you hold open auditions? This will have to be something we discuss with whatever studio we partner with. But we hear everyone’s plea and will see what we can do.

5. Have you considered making a TV series instead? Yes, initially we had thrown around the idea of a TV show, but came to the conclusion that it would make a better film. Don’t you agree?!

6. Will each book be it’s own film? YES! We are planning for a franchise in order to give each book the time and attention it deserves.

7. Will Richelle be involved in the movie? This entire world was created by Mead and it would be remiss of us to cut her out of the loop. We met with her in San Diego a few weeks ago and hope to continue a dialogue with her as the film progresses.

8. Who will write the script? We will work with the studio to match the series with a great screenwriter.

9. Who will direct? While we have some ideas of who we would like, again, this will be worked out with the studio down the road. It’s a two way road, whoever we want – has to want to do the film in return.

10. What will it be rated? Until we have a finalized film, we won’t be able to answer this question. However, it’s safe to say that we want to make a film that will make the entire fan base happy.

11. Have you started location scouting? No, but we are very excited about the potential of finding destinations around the world that bring Mead’s words to life.

12. Are you going to be staying true to the story & characters? This is a tough one to answer. Whenever you translate a book into a film, you loose some elements that sometimes leave fans upset. You have to remember that the film needs to make sense to every viewer, not just the literary fans, and we only have about 90 minutes to 2 hours to do that. Many times that means streamlining the story and leaving out a few details. BUT we are committed to staying true to the essence of the series.

13. Have the Producers read the entire series? YES! Before obtaining the rights, Preger read the series and had his team read them as well. Before Murphy joined forces with Preger, he read the series too!

14. What made you interested in VA? The strong female lead made this “vampire” story unique because most of the female leads we are seeing are weak and needing to be saved by a man. In VA, Rose is the one saving others – even guys! Also, the friendship between Rose and Lissa was written to be just as strong as the love story between Rose and Dimitri – which we felt was a great spin. Mead took the century old story of “the vampire” to the next level!

For those of you who don’t know, Preger Entertainment are the driving force behind the creation of the Vampire Academy film adaption.

SK.com: The books are set in a number of places, Montana, Las Vagas, Russia, Siberia and many more. The settings are very important to the story, the intricate Russian architecture, the schools sprawling gothic buildings surrounded by forest… Are you planning on shooting on location or does it seem more likely to make good use of the editing department and create the world on screen?

Michael: Many of your questions, like this one, are decisions that will get made after a Studio, Writer and most importantly, the Director, have been brought onto the project. Decisions like this one will have most to do with the approved budget.

SK.com: In the past there have been a number of movies made with large fan bases, a large number of these fans see only themselves as their favourite characters and would jump at the opportunity to audition. Some of these movies have refused to accept international applications from actors… Do you see Vampire Academy coming to the same conclusion and using only American actors? Or do international aspiring actors have a chance? If not are you able explain why?

Michael: I get this question a lot. Again, no decisions have been made regarding the casting plans. Typically, a Casting Agent is hired and it is their responsibility to facilitate the process. While I understand the interest from many of the fans regarding this. It must be understood that the casting of a Motion Picture is a critical part of the success of any film and that the creative team behind the project is responsible to assemble the most experienced and talented actors possible. Honestly, it is unlikely that a Studio would approve anyone other than a very experienced and trained actor to take on any of the principle roles in the movie. When you consider the millions of dollars put at risk by a Studio in making a film such as this, they can not afford to really take risk with unproven raw talent. I like to think that maybe, depending upon the Studio, we could cast some Fans in secondary roles or stand-in extras. But the process of selecting a Rose, or Lissa, or any other of the principle roles will be a challenging and heavily critical process by both the filmmakers and the Studio.

SK.com: There is a large debate in the Vampire Academy community about the merits of using experienced actors as opposed to inexperienced unknowns… Could you see it as possible for Rose to be a complete unknown with limited experience?

Michael: Same answer. There is a big difference between “unknown” and “unproven”. There is lots of young new talent emerging in Hollywood and throughout the world really. So the issue is not about whether they are a known “star” or not. There are arguments as to whether an established “star” would be right for the principle roles, or not. Richelle has expressed her concerns regarding known talent vs. unknown talent — as she would desire the latter. The concern being that established actors all carry some baggage with them depending upon their previous roles. On the other hand, many would argue that really accomplished actors can move from role to role very successfully. So this remains one more question that can not really be answered at this early stage in the process.

SK.com: What are the major thought processes that go into picking directors and screen writers? Is it difficult?

Michael: Wow! Do you have any easy questions? The Director and/or Writer can be the most important decision of all! What we look for is someone who has demonstrated through their past work, the nuance and sensitivity to the material and characters in the story. Once again, the Producers and the Studio will attempt to collaborate in this vision and find the talent who can fulfill both the creative realization as well as shoulder the responsibility of bringing that vision to the screen. It is a long and arduous process to say the least. Likewise, the Writers or Director sought after must also share a passion and interest for the work. Then, there are the other issues as to availability, as most professional talent typically have commitments moving forward. So the timing issues are yet one more problem to deal with as Studios must plan ahead for their releases and time frames of availability are very important as well.

SK.com: How much do the fan’s opinions affect decisions? Preger seems really into getting ideas from fans, is this something they do for all productions, or is it because VA is so popular that they want to make sure they’re getting it right?

Michael: My decision to have the fans input is something unique to this project. Because this work is as well established with the fan base as it is, makes it a different type of project for us. First, it’s the support of these fans that is critical to even getting this film made. To make the case in Hollywood that we believe we have the next BIG franchise to follow on the heels of Harry Potter and Twilight is not something anyone takes seriously from the start. That is an ambitious assumption to make in this business! But it’s the passion and support of these fans that is forcing Hollywood to at least consider the possibilities. Also, the input we get everyday on our Facebook Page and other sites like Shadowkissed.com, is helping us understand what exactly the fans are expecting in this film. That can only help us as we move forward both creatively and conceptually. We believe this will make a difference in the film we make.

SK.com: In light of so many recent film adaptations that began with good intentions to include everything and ended up cutting out large chunks in the end, what is the defining line in determining what information from the book to include? How do you decide what has to make it and what can end up on the cutting room floor at the end of the day?

Michael: What matters most is that the underlying story (however it gets structured) is a satisfying and fulfilling experience for the film audience. I think everyone understands that we cannot make a film that includes every little detail of the book. The best way to explain this is that a typical screenplay is roughly 100 – 110 pages. The average book runs 350 – 500 pages. What the challenge is for the filmmakers is to convey the essences, nuance, personalities, situations and locals of the story in an abbreviated but compelling way so that the film audience can enjoy a similar experience to the books. This is what makes filmmaking an ART. There is nothing easy about that! In the end, a creative collaboration between the Writers and the Director will determine how that is best accomplished.

SK.com: What type of film do you hope to create with VA? Independent? Dramatic? Blockbuster? Do you think this will determine who you chose for a screenwriter/director?

Michael: Whatever path the project takes, i.e., Indie, small studio film, or blockbuster, will depend on many different variables. Production budgets, Marketing commitments by a distributor, release schedules, commitment of talent for the project, and 100 other issues will ultimately determine what this film will be. Personally, I want to see this film set up as a Blockbuster. I believe Richelle has created a universe around this work that has all the potential of being the next big franchise. I also believe the first film will be critical to the success and future of the franchise. At the same time, I believe the fan base can and will make this film something special. My job is to make certain that we make the best film possible regardless of our opportunities in setting it up. The good news is that we have already received a couple of offers, but we have held off so far in reaching any decisions until we have had the opportunity to explore the project with all the interested parties. My confidence is high at this point that we will get a film to market. But what that film can be is still a question we are exploring.

SK.com: How are you determining your target audience? While a lot of Vampire Academy fans enjoy other vampire related teen books, the series are all very different. How do you intend to market the book to movie adaptation so that it stands alone and strong on its own?

Michael: While the similarities of Vampire Academy to the other “Teen Vampire” series share certain common ideas, I’ve always seen VA as a much bigger story. It is as much a coming-of-age story delving into universal truths about life, relationships, friendships, personal conflicts, and good and evil. For me, that defines a universal audience. Something everyone can relate to. While the demographics for the book series has been predominantly teen female, I believe the story can appeal to a much broader audience than that. So the film I want to see is one that can connect with all demographics. I see no reason why this story cannot appeal to a strong male audience as well. I think the marketing behind the book series somewhat precluded that, but I see no reason the film can not bridge that gap. One of the reasons I reached out to Don Murphy for this project is to send advance warning to that core male audience that this story is not what you think it is! Anyone who is familiar with Don’s past projects are certain to take notice. If we can deliver on that, and we have the story with which to do it, I think we can deliver a film for all audiences. When Don calls me up saying “I can’t wait for the next installment”, I know I’m on the right path! One thing Don is not known for is boring or silly stories! If Don likes it, and he is very very passionate about it, I know a bigger audience can and will be delivered.

SK.com: What is the range of freedom you give a director and screenwriter in terms of changing the nature of the true work? Is close casting to the look and feel of real characters the strength of the movie, even if the story changes? Or do you prefer a more rounded out adaptation?

Michael: Our goal is to remain as true to Richelle’s world as possible. But the creative process, as explained above, will ultimately determine the essence of the adaptation. Some of the techniques often employed in adapting a book to a screenplay include such things as the combining of certain characters, albeit no decisions like that have been made as yet. Other techniques sometimes involve the consolidation of time, locations and events. So a literal scene by scene adaptation should not be expected. These changes are made to help condense the story to fit within the allotted time for a film. But all of this is still to be decided. In the end we want a film that conveys all the emotions, personalities, conflicts and resolutions that make the story, the story. Our aspiration is to not disappoint the fans. That is why we value their input from the beginning.

SK.com: Book to Film Adaptations seem to develop further and further as the series goes along…going off the successful models of the past and the flops what are some of your plans to ensure that VA fans are satisfied with the work and not left hoping for a sequel that never comes? And how do you think these models will help you avoid what seem to be the obvious pitfalls of adaptations?

Michael: What’s great about Vampire Academy and sets it apart from the other series is the depth of story and characters Richelle has introduced us to. The truth is, there is more story than we could ever squeeze into the film series. This allows us a lot of latitude and substances in creating the films. One big complaint we hear a lot is where in some of the other adaptations they run out of story and have to invent new conflicts or events to move the scenes forward. That is one problem we will never have. With this “embarrassment of riches”, I can’t see where we would have to invent anything new. Not to mention the fact that the second series of books is already in progress. My biggest concern is how do we get all this adapted quickly enough to keep the film audience happy?

SK.com: What initially excited you about the Vampire Academy and what are you most excited to recreating on the big screen?

Michael: What I find most intriguing is the character of Rose. The strong female personality. It’s her grit and determination to over come all her conflicts that really captivates me. The fact that she is also the imperfect hero — prone to mistakes, screw-ups, and self inflicted problems in her life that makes the story come alive. While her circumstances are unique, to say the least, her problems are the kind of problems that ring true. So as fantastic as her world is, we can all relate in real terms and life experiences. Her decisions, right and wrong, are decisions we all face in our real lives to some degree. The balance between right and wrong, truth and lies, good and evil, love and jealousy all combine in a life of reality and purpose. Survival of not only her existence, but her integrity and sanity.

SK.com: How did you become involved with film making, do you have any tips for those wanting to pursue a career in film production?

Michael: Yes! there are easier ways to make a living! Personally, I got involved accidentally. You have to have a lot of passion and commitment in this business. The failures will always outweigh the successes, and the tenacity and dedication it takes to survive in this industry is more than you can imagine. But if you have the commitment and the years to pursue it, the rewards can also be very gratifying.

SK.com: There have been a lot of fan disputes on the Facebook page surrounding actor Ben Barnes and model Andrei Andrei for the role of Dimitri… Would you support either of these actors for Dimitri now? Is there anything you want to say to the warring fans?

Michael: Umm, having followed that debate for many months now, I think I’ll side step this question! No matter what I answer someone will be unhappy. So all I’ll say is wait for the movie — then you’ll have my answer.

SK.com: Are the any ‘dream actors’ you would love to work with for any of the Vampire Academy characters? Any that suddenly appear in your mind when you think of them?

Michael: At this point, no!

SK.com: The fans are rather anxious about the movie, and we are sure a number of them are wondering if there is anything they can do to help with the movie… Is there anything they can do to to assist? Or do you have any idea what we can expect to hear during 2011?

Michael: I think you all will be hearing about a deal being completed for this project and that progress on the film is underway. What we need from the fans is their continued support and participation. The fans remain the driving force behind getting this picture made. The fans participation on The OfficialVampireAcademyMovie Page on Facebook has had a real impact in Hollywood and the Studios are quit impressed! The bigger the Page becomes, the more compelling the project becomes to the Studios!

SK.com: There are some awesome ‘Team” shirts around at the moment, you would be a team Belikov right?

Michael: That’s news to me? The only tee-shirt I wear is “Please Make My Movie”!

Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway – Rose is the seventeen-year-old, half-vampire half-human (Dhampir) protagonist of the Vampire Academy series and is best friends with Princess Lissa Dragomir. Her birthday is at the end of March. She died in the same accident as Lissa's parents and brother in the past, but Lissa unknowingly brought her back, making her a "Shadow-Kissed" Dhampir. Because of this, she has a one-sided bond to Lissa, allowing her to read Lissa's thoughts, sense her feelings and see through her eyes. Sarcastic and quick-witted, Rose is training to become Lissa's Guardian, while in the process of falling in love with her mentor, Dimitri Belikov. Rose is described as beautiful with semi-exotic desert-princess features: big dark eyes, dark brown hair, and lightly tanned skin. She is 5'7" with an athletic but curvy figure. She has a strained relationship with her mother, the famous Guardian Janine Hathaway. She is accused of murdering Queen Tatiana at the end of Spirit Bound but is later revealed to be innocent, the real culprit being revealed as Tasha Ozera. She enters into a relationship with Adrian after returning from Russia and denies her feelings for Dimitri throughout the course of Last Sacrifice. Nearing the end of the book, she is surprised to learn of Dimitri's strong feelings for her, feelings he had previously denied. To Dimitri's disbelief, she returns his feelings and they reunite once more. She loses her bond with Lissa in Last Sacrifice when Rose almost dies but comes back on her own, rather than being brought back by Spirit. The series ends with Rose officially starting her relationship with her true love, Dimitri, her future looking bright.

Vasilisa "Lissa" Dragomir (Vasilisa Sabina Rhea Dragomir) – A seventeen-year-old Moroi princess and Rose Hathaway's best friend. Lissa is the last vampire in the Dragomir royal line, giving her the title "Princess." Her family, along with Rose, died in a car accident when she was fifteen, but Lissa unknowingly brought Rose back from the dead, creating a bond between them. Lissa is described as beautiful, with long, platinum blond hair and jade green eyes. Her element is the extremely rare "Spirit" like St. Vladimir's, which is a psychic element that comes from the mind and soul. Before she left the Academy, she was in a relationship with Aaron, who Mia Rinaldi started dating after Lissa left. She develops feelings for Christian Ozera in Vampire Academy and starts dating him later on in the same book. Lissa later discovers to have a half-sister, Jill, by her father and subsequently is crowned Queen. She loses her bond with Rose in Last Sacrifice when Rose almost died but came back on her own, rather than being brought back by Spirit. The series ends with her coronation as queen.

Dimitri Belikov – A well-respected 24-year-old Dhampir of Russian origin from Siberia, assigned to be Lissa's Guardian along with Rose. Dimitri has a slight Russian accent, and likes old western novels. He is 6'7", has brown eyes, shoulder length hair a few shades lighter than Rose's dark brown hair, and tanned skin. He is sometimes described as a 'god,' in reference to his reputation as one of the most skilled and 'badass' guardians around. He is also Rose's mentor and love interest. He returns Rose's feelings but attempts to stay out of a relationship with her for most of the series, since it would interfere with his guardian duties. He is turned Strigoi at the end of Shadow Kiss and is later turned back by Lissa near the end of Spirit Bound. He becomes increasingly depressed after being turned back to a dhampir, riddled with intense guilt over the things he did while he was Strigoi. He helps Rose break out of prison in Last Sacrifice and goes on the run with her. Throughout the journey, he slowly starts to open his heart and discover life and love again. Though at first claiming to have lost his love for Rose, he later admits otherwise and they begin a relationship nearing the end of Last Sacrifice.

Christian Ozera – Lissa's primary love interest. He is an outcast because his parents (Lucas and Moira) willingly became Strigoi. He's a royal Moroi who holds radical ideas about fighting against Strigoi. He specializes in Fire magic. His physical appearance is described to be tall with black hair and crystal blue eyes. After his parents were killed, he was raised by his aunt Tasha Ozera. He is left devastated at the end of Last Sacrifice, when it was revealed that it was his aunt that killed Tatiana.

Adrian Ivashkov – A royal Moroi and great-nephew of the queen. He has messy but stylish brown hair, emerald green eyes, and high cheekbones; 6'1" tall. He, like Lissa, is a Spirit user and suffers the same side effects as she does. He numbs the effects by drinking alcohol and chain smoking. He and Lissa start to explore the different abilities Spirit users have. Adrian has the ability to "walk dreams," which he often uses to visit Rose when they are both sleeping. Rose meets Adrian at the ski resort in Frostbite where his feelings for her are no secret. He enters into a relationship with Rose in Spirit Bound, but is broken-hearted at the end of Last Sacrifice, when Rose reveals she still loves Dimitri and is unable to continue their relationship.

Victor Dashkov – A royal Moroi with Sandovsky's Disease. He is Natalie's father and was a dear friend of Lissa's father. Due to his disease, he does not have a chance of ever becoming king of the Moroi. He was imprisoned for torturing Lissa into curing his disease with Spirit in Vampire Academy and is later broken out of prison by Rose, Lissa, Eddie, and Mikhail in Spirit Bound. After a Strigoi attack, they lose Victor and his brother Robert Doru in a Las Vegas casino. Rose unintentionally kills him at the end of Last Sacrifice.

Natalie Dashkov – A royal Moroi with jet-black hair and jade green eyes who specializes in earth magic. She is very awkward among other royals and is known for talking a lot. She was once a good friend of Lissa's but later becomes Strigoi to rescue her father Victor from the Academy's jail. Dimitri kills her in Vampire Academy after she tried to kill Rose. In Spirit Bound, it is implied that Victor had her turn Strigoi because he hoped his brother would be able to turn her back after she broke him out.

Mason Ashford – A Dhampir who is one of Rose's best friends, and also a novice Guardian like her. He frequently helps out Rose throughout the series. He is interested in her romantically, and Rose eventually attempts a relationship with him, only to find it fall apart because of her unbreakable connection to Dimitri. He dies in Frostbite while the others (except Rose who is fighting alongside him) escape. His ghost continues to aid Rose in Shadow Kiss and finds peace at the end of the book.

Mia Rinaldi – A non-royal Moroi whose element is Water. Mia had a grudge against Lissa (and by default, Rose) because of how Lissa's older brother, Andre, used her and broke her heart. After the events in Frostbite, she gets over it and has since been a trusted friend to them. She is described as having a soft face and curly blond hair that makes her look very young and almost doll-like. Her parents work for one of the royal families but she prefers to keep it a secret; however, Mason found this out in Vampire Academy and told Rose.

Tasha Ozera – Natasha "Tasha" Ozera is Christian's aunt. Like Christian, she has black hair, wintry blue eyes, and is a Fire user. She took care of Christian when his parents turned Strigoi. She has a scar across her face from the fight she put up when Christian's parents tried to turn him. She is romantically interested in Dimitri, and wanted to have a child with him, but he did not return the feelings because of Rose. She is revealed to be Queen Tatiana's killer in Last Sacrifice, her motive cited as her dislike for the age law. Rose later finds out Tasha still had strong feelings for Dimitri, who was unable to enter a relationship with her due to his love for Rose, explaining Tasha's desire to frame Rose for the crime.

Janine Hathaway – Rose Hathaway's legendary mother who is 5'1 feet tall, has curly auburn hair, brown eyes, and is very stern. She appears in Frostbite. She is a very 'badass' Dhampir, according to her reputation, who has killed many Strigoi. Her relationship with Rose starts off very sketchy but improves throughout the series.

Ibrahim 'Abe' Mazur – Rose Hathaway's father and a well-known Turkish mobster described as the 'knee cap-breaking' type. His physical appearance is tall (like any other Moroi), slightly broad, dark-haired and threatening, and is known for his unusual fashion sense, wearing bold colors and scarves with a beard and earrings to top it off. Rose once described him as a "pirate mobster." He is guarded by two Dhampirs and is known for making trades, blackmailing, and other illegal businesses. He also has many connections in the Moroi world. Rose meets him during her journey in Siberia in Blood Promise. After Rose was accused of killing Queen Tatiana in Spirit Bound, Abe offers to be her lawyer despite not officially being one.

Sydney Sage – An Alchemist who helps Rose find Dimitri's hometown, Baia, in Siberia. She is a human who knows a lot about Moroi and dhampirs but dislikes them. She has many tricks and techniques in getting rid of Strigoi bodies and is also equipped with a special potion that can turn a dead Strigoi corpse into a fist sized ball so it is unrecognizable. Sydney helps Rose escape from jail and find the last Dragomir in Last Sacrifice. She is the narrator of the spin-off series Bloodlines. During the book, it is revealed she has a strained relationship with her rigid father and younger syster, Zoe, mainly because of her aparent 'betrayal' of the Alchemists in Last Sacrifice. She is grudgingly sent to guard Jill Mastriano Dragomir in Palm Strings where she uncovers an illegal trade involving Alchemists dealing in Moroi blood and saliva which redeems her in her fellow Alchemists' eyes.

Queen Tatiana Ivashkov – Ruler of the Moroi and dhampirs. She was killed in Spirit Bound. Rose is accused of killing Tatiana, but she was actually killed by Tasha Ozera. She was also said to have a secret relationship with Ambrose and Blake Lazar. Her political views leaned away from Rose's point of view, causing bad blood between them.

Jillian "Jill" Mastrano – Jillian Mastrano is a Moroi, a Air and Water user who attends St. Vladimir's. She is 15, has green eyes and brown curly hair. Her mother is a ballet dancer, and they live in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She meets Rose in Shadow Kiss, and asks her how to fight the old-fashioned way, but Rose tells her to ask Christian Ozera. In Last Sacrifice, she was revealed as the illegitimate daughter of Eric Dragomir, thus the half sister of Lissa. After dying before the begining of Bloodlines and being brought back as a shadow-kissed by Adrian, she is anonimously sent away to Palm Springs for her own protection. She develops a crush on Lee as is very shaken when he's killed by the Strigoi.

Eddie Castile – He is a Dhampir and is one of Rose's closest friends after the Spokane incident involving him, Rose, Mason, Christian, and Mia. He's loyal and after the book Frostbite it is told he matures a lot from Spokane. He was also the best friend of Mason Ashford. In Last Sacrifice, he kills a Moroi defending Lissa, and is tried for his actions. He has a crush on Jill.
